As part of our commitment to research excellence, Newcastle University expects colleagues and students to adhere to the highest standards of research integrity. Although instances of research misconduct are rare, this may occur when actions and behaviours fall short of the expectations set out in the University's Code of Good Practice in Research.
The University takes research misconduct seriously and has developed a policy and procedure setting out how we will respond to any allegations in line with the guidance produced by the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO).
Where possible, colleagues are encouraged to raise any concerns with the individual, their Line Manager or the appropriate Head of Academic Unit in the first instance. Alternatively, concerns can also be raised with the Research Integrity and Governance Manager (email: research.integrity@ncl.ac.uk).
Formal complaints
Formal complaints should be submitted in writing using the Reporting Allegations of Misconduct Form and submitted by email to: research.integrity@ncl.ac.uk alongside any supporting evidence. Although Complainants are expected to put their name to any allegation they make, formal allegations will be treated confidentially. Anonymous allegations will be considered at the discretion of the University.
The University acknowledges that good working relationships are central to positive and inclusive research environments, and will take action to address any instances of bullying and harassment. Any concerns, problems or complaints relating to relationships with colleagues should be reported in line with the University's Grievance Policy or Bullying and Harassment Policy (staff login required).
As a signatory of the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, the University produces an annual report on activites to promote research integrity and anonymised data on research misconduct cases. A copy of this report is available to view on the University's Research Integrity webpages.
