Aims

A1: To gain the knowledge and understanding of different configurations, components and equipment used in marine
risers, umbilicals, and mooring lines.

A2: To address the theoretical and practical aspects of marine risers, umbilicals, and mooring lines.

A3: To develop students' skills in designing and analysing mooring and riser systems.

A4: To gain the knowledge and understanding of elemental concepts of umbilical engineering.

Outline Of Syllabus

1.Configurations and components of marine risers, umbilicals and mooring lines.

2.Failure modes of marine risers, umbilicals and mooring line systems.

3.Calculation methods of quasi-static analysis for marine risers, umbilicals and mooring lines, such as catenary
theory.

4.Dynamic analysis method for marine risers, umbilicals and mooring lines.

5.Computing software for marine risers, umbilicals and mooring lines analysis.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures are designed to convey the underlying concepts and knowledge of mooring and riser systems (IKO1 – IKO6), umbilical systems (IKO7) and the professional skills required to design and analyse mooring lines, risers and umbilical (ISO1 – ISO6).

Practicals sessions are a mix of supervised and self-organising activities in which the students develop intellectual and problem-solving skills to design and analyse mooring, riser and umbilical systems (ISO1 – ISO6).

Independent study gives time for the students to read recommended references (IKO1 – IKO7) and practise their professional skills (ISO1 – ISO6).

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The exam tests acquisition of a clear general knowledge of the subject plus the ability to think and analyse a problem quickly, to select from and to apply both the general knowledge and detailed knowledge of aspects of the subject. The exam also assesses problem solving skills, the ability to work unaided and to communicate clearly and concisely in writing.
