Aims
The year abroad aims to:
- provide students with the opportunity to study chemistry in a prestigious university in another country, and
experience the culture of that country for a year,
- provide a period of practical experience which will benefit your academic study and longer term
career,
- provide the opportunity to recognise and record the development of work place skills,
- facilitate personal development in a research setting abroad.
Outline Of Syllabus
Students liaise with the Study Abroad Coordinator regarding placements. The School has exchange agreements with a large number of universities abroad including Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, University of Texas El Paso, University of Vermont, University of Waterloo, Università di Bologna, University College Dublin, Universidad de Granada, University of Groningen, Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, University of Malta, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Università di Padua, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Université de Strasbourg and Université de Versaille
Students undertake their project during the academic year at the host university. During this time there is no taught content from the university. The host university may provide induction and training activities as appropriate.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
As students are away from the University, Guided Independent study is used for all learning activities. The Module leader is available for consultation regarding all aspects of the placement.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The supervisor will monitor the students work throughout the placement and report back to the Study Abroad Coordinator. This report is summatively assessed on a pass/fail basis.
The student will also complete a log book demonstrating the skills and learning achieved during the placement year.
