Your programme is made up of credits, the total differs on programme to programme.

Semester 1 Credit Value: 10
ECTS Credits: 5.0
European Credit Transfer System

Aims

The module provides students with (1) practical experience in empirical research design and different types of analyses (e.g. quantitative and qualitative analyses) and (2) different methods of research dissemination, while giving students the opportunity to develop as independent researchers.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module guides students through a full research cycle, beginning with exploratory qualitative research, then psychometric scale development and finally hypothesis testing through a survey study.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The overall rationale is to teach empirical psychology through practical experience. The various sessions are aimed at providing opportunities for students to develop and practice the necessary skills and knowledge outcomes.

The lecture materials introduce each research phase and guide students to obtain the necessary background knowledge required to conduct their research and justify their methodological choices.

The practical sessions guide students through the research phases and the relevant research steps, culminating in communicating the findings in a full APA report, a scientific oral presentation and poster. Students are asked to apply the theoretical knowledge introduced in the lecture materials thereby developing both their knowledge of empirical psychology and their research skills.
The student-led sessions aim to encourage students to take responsibility of their research project and take initiative in trouble shooting and problem solving. By doing so students will develop skills and confidence as independent researchers.

Guided independent study provides opportunity to synthesise and consolidate the skills and knowledge covered in the activities mentioned above. Furthermore, the APA full report, presentation and scientific poster will be prepared in private study time.

A blended online-offline method is used for the delivery of this module to reflect the blended offline-online method of conducting research that we teach the students. Practical 1, that involves face-to-face qualitative data collection will be taught in exclusively PiP labs. The second and third practicals that involve online data collection will be taught in online staff-led labs.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Other Assessment
Description Semester When Set Percentage Comment
Poster1M50Poster (APA format, A2 or A1 size)
Report1M50Full APA report 1500 words
Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Description Semester When Set Comment
Oral Presentation1MOral presentation (6 minutes plus 1 minute questions) - present in person.
Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The APA qualitative full report, the presentation and poster aim to assess the students ability to use different methods of disseminating research in empirical psychology. To demonstrate understanding of the research methods taught and demonstrate the ability to evaluate the literature, use statistical packages, and follow APA guidelines.

Methods of Assessment:
1 oral presentation (6 mins) that will give the students the opportunity to demonstrate presentation skills and understanding of the principles of qualitative research in general and thematic analysis more specifically.
1 academic poster (in APA format, A2 or A1 size).
1 full APA report (1500 words)

If the module is failed, the Board of Examiners will specify which component/components must be re-submitted and the overall module mark will be capped at 40.
