To foster independent thinking and develop research skills in critical thinking, writing and presentation. These aims will be achieved by students doing independent research in an English language/linguistics topic, and writing up their results in an extended essay (5000 words). In this, they will be helped by a supervisor, i.e. a member of staff with relevant expertise in the general topic area that the student is working in.
