Aims
To develop professional skills required for a chartered mechanical engineer, including the ability to understand and apply core engineering science and engineering IT skills.
Outline Of Syllabus
Introduction to IT software which supports engineering applications (spreadsheets, MatLab). Introduction to engineering study skills and project skills. Awareness of engineering ethical risk and safety issues. Reinforcement and application of core mechanical engineering science (mechanics and thermofluids) to develop problem-solving and study (CPD) skills.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Skills are assessed as they are practised through regular exercises with rapid in-class formative feedback. Knowledge and understanding of core engineering sciences are provided by other compulsory modules and only the skills of applying them are practised and assessed in this module.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Skills are assessed as they are practised through regular exercises with rapid in-class formative feedback and summative assessment to monitor student involvement.
For the purposes of professional body accreditation, in order to obtain a passing mark overall for this module (40%) at the first attempt the minimum acceptable mark for each of the assessment items specified below shall be 30%, with the maximum possible module overall mark where this is not the case being restricted to 35% (Undergraduate Progress Regulations):
(1) 50% Computing/IT Practical.
(2) 50% Skills Exercises and Tutorials.
