Aims

To introduce students to the fundamental concepts of chemistry as part of a broad basis for future study in engineering and science disciplines.

At the end of this course students should:

• know the language of chemistry
• be able to manipulate formulae, equations and amounts
• know about the elements and the Periodic Table
• understand atomic structure
• appreciate the energy changes involved in reactions
• understand the physical properties of gases and the chemical properties of some common gases
• know about bonding and structure in organic and inorganic compounds
• know about a range of functional groups in organic chemistry
• understand trends in the reactivity of elements and their compounds

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The live and recorded lectures will be used to convey information.
The tutorials will be used to provide formative feedback on the four quiz exercises following their completion by the students. The quiz components allow students to practice the concepts introduced and to obtain formative feedback. The class test assesses overall knowledge and application of the module content.
