Course benefits
Online Academic English is an intensive course to develop your language and academic skills. It will prepare you for a pre-university course or university degree.
Our course will help you adjust to the demands and challenges of UK higher education. You will study core elements of the English language and develop knowledge and skills in:
- academic speaking and listening
- academic writing
- note-taking
- research and project skills
- report writing
- presenting
The course will help you become more fluent and confident using English. You'll be able to practice your language skills in a vibrant online learning environment.
This course is suitable if you have an IELTS between 4.0 and 5.5 and you want to improve your English language so you can:
- progress to a degree at Newcastle without needing to take an external IELTS exam*
- progress to an INTO Newcastle course without needing to take an external IELTS exam*
*Progression is subject to meeting Tier 4 student visa requirements.
About the course
This specially designed Online Academic English course offers a convenient route to reaching your required English language level. A blend of live classroom learning and interactive online materials, you get the same standards and quality of teaching but in the comfort of your own home.

Course features
- As a highly engaged and hard-working student, you can expect to make progress of between 0.5 and 1.0 IELTS point per term through this intensive online course.
- 25 learning hours a week, with 10 hours of live virtual classroom lessons and 15 hours of pre-recorded lectures and online interactive materials.
- No visa or UKVI IELTS needed to enrol, other language English language qualifications accepted including Duolingo and Password.
- Gain free access to our online academic preparation course, INTO Get Ready for English, once you confirm your place, to help improve your English language skills and get used to online learning before you start your programme.
You will:
- develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and learn to communicate effectively in English
- grow your vocabulary through discussion on current affairs

How to apply
English requirements
A minimum of IELTS 3.0 (with 3.0 in writing) or an equivalent score. INTO Newcastle Centre can only accept a UKVI approved IELTS test for this course. The INTO Newcastle website has guidance about UKVI IELTS or contact us for more details.
