Updates made to the 2022-23 student academic experience information
All students studying on an on-campus programme will receive in-person teaching. We have been providing the vast majority of our teaching, lectures and tutorials in-person. This has been from the start of the academic year in September 2021 and continues to be the case. Where online and digital options have enhanced the student experience, or been requested by our students, we will continue to use them to benefit their learning.
Keeping you safe
To keep you safe and to enable us to deliver in-person teaching:
- we respect your personal choice to wear a face covering on campus
- we will continue to maintain our enhanced cleaning regime across campus
- we encourage everyone to maintain good personal hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus
- please respect people’s personal space whilst on campus - where possible maintain a reasonable distance between yourself and others
- we will continue to work closely with the UK Health Security Agency and local public health teams to monitor case numbers and discuss the introduction of additional measures if this becomes necessary
- we continue to encourage students and colleagues where appropriate to get vaccinated against Covid-19
Ensuring a fulfilling university experience
We want you to get the most out of your teaching and learning and will do everything we can to support you. Seminars and other small group teaching are taking place in person. Laboratories, practicals, workshops and clinical teaching are being timetabled as normal. As we move through the next academic year, we know how quickly things can change. We have the steps in place to ensure you have a fulfilling university experience - whatever the circumstances.
Should Covid-19 restrictions need to tighten again we can reduce on-campus, in-person elements of our teaching and increase the use of new approaches to online learning, teaching, and assessment.
Our 2022 modules are built with flexibility in mind if we are required to reduce or suspend the on-campus and in-person teaching. This would be in the case of government or local authority changes in regulations or significant restrictions on the ability of both UK and international students to travel to Newcastle.
You can be confident that all programmes fairly assess the knowledge, skills and abilities learned during your degree. Assessment approaches will vary by degree programme and the needs of external bodies. In-person invigilated summative examinations are just one of the ways in which we assess.
For more information on the approaches to assessment for your programme, contact your School.
Key review points
We are monitoring the situation around travel to the UK and the impact on students who may be affected by restrictions. See the section on Support for new and continuing international students travelling to Newcastle.
How we will decide on changes to teaching and assessment
We will only move to online delivery as a last option and, any changes will be triggered only after consultation with the regional Director of Public Health. Your School will contact students immediately to make sure you’re kept informed of any changes.

International Welcome Programme
Our International Welcome starts on Tuesday 13 September and runs until Friday 16 September.
The programme of events and information sessions will be held both in person and online. This means if your arrival is slightly delayed and you cannot arrive in time for International Welcome you can:
- still be involved
- meet new students
- learn about your new city
The University continues to encourage students and colleagues where appropriate to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
The UK’s vaccine roll-out has been hugely successful. Anybody aged 5 or over in the UK is eligible for the Covid-19 vaccination for free, regardless of their nationality or immigration status.
Nobody in England has to pay for the Covid-19 vaccination. It is easy to get the vaccination too. Once you have registered for free with a GP surgery, you can now book your vaccination online. Even if you don’t register straight away, you can still ask for the vaccination through a local medical centre.
Overseas work and study placements
Currently, we are planning for semester-long and full-year overseas work placements or study exchanges to go ahead in 2022-2023.
If international work or study placements are affected by Covid-19 restrictions, we’ll work with partner institutions and placement hosts to do all we can to support you.
However, both mandatory and optional overseas placements will be subject to:
- country-by-country risk assessments and sign off
- the current situation within the UK and in host countries
Other types of optional placements
The availability of other types of shorter placements may depend on the public health situation. If any can not go ahead due to Covid restrictions, we will look at alternatives for all placement, field trips and international mobility activity.
Applying for Accommodation
You can now apply for your student accommodation. Don’t worry though. It isn’t on a first come first served basis, so you just need to make sure you apply by 31 July 2022 to be eligible for our New Student Guarantee.
If you’re making an application after 31 July, whilst not covered by the guarantee we will still process your application. We will be able to place most students. But rest assured if we are unable to help with our own accommodation, we will support you with advice and guidance to find alternative accommodation in the city.
See our FAQs for further information.
Accommodation arrival dates for the 2022 Academic Year:
- International Student Arrivals: 13–14 September (the earliest arrival date is 13 September). There are no quarantine requirements for overseas arrivals at present
- UK Student Arrivals: 15–18 September (the earliest arrival date is 15 September)
